Our Wedding: Must-Read Blogs for a Sanity Check
Written by Sara on March 18, 2010 – 9:00 am -
As we all know, wedding planning can get tough sometimes. With beautiful, expensive weddings blanketing the blogosphere these days, it’s often difficult to keep perspective.
So today, I’m bringing you a list of the blogs I read each day that help to keep me sane:
1. A Practical Wedding. A must-read for any bride, ever. How’s that for an endorsement?
2. A Cupcake Wedding. Totally and completely honest account of what it’s like to plan a wedding. Writing your own wedding ceremony? Go here, like now.
3. A Los Angeles Love. I can’t verbalize the reasons why I love this blog, except to turn you toward this post. I’m the fly on the wall watching you read it, and smiling as you just. get. it.
4. Wedding For Two. Because weddings are about TWO people, Ellie & Mark write their blog TOGETHER. ‘Nuff said.
5. A Desert Fete. Read the archives of her wedding posts, and be prepared to think seriously about a short, non-wedding dress for your wedding. I sure did.
6. Project Subrosa. From her this-is-what-weddings-are-all-about wedding to her tales of being a mommy (and a feminist!), the fabulous Cate is just that: fabulous.
Go forth and read…like now.

APW’s Meg on Morning Weddings
Written by Sara on September 16, 2009 – 9:51 am -Hi all – happy Wednesday!

Today on A Practical Wedding, Meg answered a question that I posed to her via email a few days ago. As you all know from an earlier post, I’m lobbying hard for a Saturday morning/mid-day wedding. Meg, a newlywed who was married on a Sunday morning in August, had wonderful advice to offer!
I felt that the cons that Meg offered (a very early, rushed wedding day morning) were absolutely right-on. That’s something I’ve wondered about, especially since J and I are open to taking photos with each other before the ceremony. If we were to have a morning ceremony, that would be nearly impossible. However, Meg also makes another wonderful point: if you do decide to have the photographers click away before the ceremony, that means less time spent in formal (and boring) group shots – yes!
As I read through Meg’s list of the great things about morning weddings, I found myself nodding my head along with her the entire time. With the sunlight streaming through the windows of our reception venue, I feel like Vintage would resemble a dreamland, which is exactly how I want to feel on my wedding day: like I’m living in a dreamland. I also love the smells and sounds of morning – dew, birds chirping, wonderful stillness.

What Meg offered about drinking and dancing really struck me; if J and I lead the way, why wouldn’t our families and friends get up and dance with us? Furthermore, if we offer a mimosa bar or morning cocktails, why wouldn’t our guests follow suit and imbibe? I think that’s such an important point to make in the argument for a morning wedding, one that I may try to use!
While I love the idea of the freedom we’ll have after the wedding subsides, it also scares me a little. I’m one of those people who would ask, “What the heck are you going to do for the rest of the day?!” But, as some members of Team Practical commented on Meg’s post, you can choose to relax in the comfort of your hotel room and eat dinner with your new husband (like Meg did), or you can choose to don some fun duds and head out for pizza and beer with your best pals.
I also think it makes sense for J and I to do a morning/mid-day wedding because of the venue we’ve chosen. Because we’re having our reception at Vintage, which is housed on the grounds of the Ultimate Golf Academy in Sioux Falls, there’s SO much to do outside, and I would hate for darkness to arrive too early for our guests to take advantage of the driving range or the mini-golf course.

Plus, the best part for me: brunch! I just LOVE breakfast foods like french toast and coffee cake, and I would love to eat comfort food at my wedding. Or, alternatively, if we had a later morning wedding, we could absolutely serve lunch (think finger sandwiches!).
What do you think, readers? Have you ever attended a morning wedding? If so, what was it like?

Marriage Don’ts?
Written by Sara on September 9, 2009 – 10:04 am -Hi everyone,
I really, really apologize for my lack in blog posting this time around; I realize that it’s been almost one whole week, and my only excuse is this: I spent my holiday weekend watching Season Six of One Tree Hill, cuddling with my dog Wyatt, and eating chocolate. Healthy, right!

Wyatt, peeking through the curtains
But today, I’m off work; my doggie Wyatt is sick with a fever and nausea; I sure hope he gets better soon!
Since I’m basically caring for my sick “child,” I don’t really have time for an all-out blog post today; in the meantime, head over to Meg’s blog at A Practical Wedding and check out her post entitled “Go to Bed Angry. Seriously.” It made me laugh this morning, because I’ve always been opposed to this very act.
Trust me. Even if you’re opposed to going to bed angry (and, like me, you stay up for three extra hours to “talk it out”), Meg’s uninhibited candor will make you giggle, and make you reevaluate your thoughts on the matter.
I promise: a real, live blog post tomorrow!

Tuesday Fanblog: A Practical Wedding
Written by Sara on August 26, 2009 – 12:50 pm -
I know, I know: it’s Wednesday. But J had two softball games last night (the advent of fall ball), and the night got away from me. So, as a treat, you’ll get not one, but two blog posts from me today!
This week’s fanblog goes out to Meg of A Practical Wedding. I’m always a fan of brides pushing against the Wedding Industrial Complex (the big, bad societal creation that forces brides to believe in monogrammed reception napkins and the like), and Meg and her guy created their own perfect day on their own terms. In fact, Meg’s a newlywed; she and her hubby just tied the knot on August 9, 2009!
For a glimpse at Meg’s wedding, page through her last few posts on A Practical Wedding. It’s evident from her writing that Meg has a confidence about her in creating a wedding day that she will remember for a lifetime, despite what society may say she “needs” to have for a wedding to be memorable. Plus, her wedding was BEAUTIFUL!
I feel so inspired to have found this blog so early in my wedding planning; there’s nothing better than to find another soul in the world who doesn’t want their wedding to be wasteful and commercial! Many blessings to you and your new hubby, Meg!
